Discover Inis Meáin

At only 3km by 5km, Inis Meáin is a relatively small island. Most of the accommodations, bars, businesses, and cafes are located in the centre of the island and are accessible on foot.

For context, a walk from the pier at Rathreagh to Bhulláin Mhóra, a remote and beautiful beach in the southern part of the island, takes around an hour at an average speed.

Pretty Trá Leitreach, the vast sandy beach, is around a 35-minute walk from the pier, while scenic Synge’s Chair will take about 50 minutes. But despite its popularity among guests to the island, walking isn’t the only option. Read on to find out how you can get around on Inis Meáin.

Moving Around on Middle Island

  1. On Foot
  2. By Bus or Taxi Tour

On Foot

You don’t need to be an expert hiker to tackle Inis Meáin; no specialist equipment is required! Inis Meain, like the other Aran Islands, is paved with narrow roads, more like pretty paths that wind away towards the blue sea, beckoning you on, inviting you to explore more!

These quiet, scenic Irish roads are referred to as ‘boreens.’ You’ll rarely run into any traffic on a boreen, at most a herd of cattle on their way to graze the next field or a farmer going about his day. Sightseeing on foot means more time to check out the variety of native plants on display in hedgerows and in culverts lining the roadways. More time to take photographs of the unique stone walls too!

By Bus or Taxi Tour

A mini-bus or taxi tour is a brilliant way to see the island, especially for those with limited mobility. Sit back, relax, and let the driver show you the way. They will point out all the places of interest and stop at the best attractions to let you have a good look around.

There are currently two minibus operators providing bus tours of Inis Meáin. As both are locals living on the island, availability may vary, and pre-booking is essential.
